COOPERATION BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATION OF SAHEL STATES AND THE AFRICAN UNION

The current Chairperson of the African Union, upon leaving a meeting at the Koulouba presidential palace:

  • “Now I understand the objective reality of the Sahel region and of the People of Burkina Faso…”
  • The AU congratulated President TRAORE “for his courage, dedication, and commitment to peace and stability in his country”

(Ouagadougou, April 20, 2026). The President of Burkina Faso, Head of State, and President of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), His Excellency Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, held talks late Monday morning with the current Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Burundian President General Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE.
‎Following his meeting at the Koulouba presidential palace, President NDAYISHIMIYE spoke to the press. He praised the patriotic love, support, and commitment of the Burkinabe people alongside their leader, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, in the war against terrorism and for sovereignty. “I found in Burkina Faso a country that has become stable, a friendly people who welcomed us with joy…,” said the Burundian president.
These discussions provided an opportunity for the current Chairperson of the African Union to congratulate the President of Burkina Faso “for his courage, dedication, and commitment to peace and stability in his country.”

“I intend to draft a thorough and objective report…and I hope that, based on this report, we can move forward together toward a shared future.”

Also during this press briefing, General NDAYISHIMIYE, who was specially dispatched by the African Union, stated: “The AU must serve as a solid bridge linking the people of Burkina Faso to the peoples of Africa, and Burkina Faso’s institutions to other African institutions.”

For the current AU Chairperson, the meeting with Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, President of Burkina Faso and President of the Confederation of Sahel States, provided an opportunity to discuss issues related to the fight against terrorism in the Sahel region, on the one hand, and the restoration of good relations between the countries of the AES Confederation and the AU, on the other.

The discussions went well. Now I understand the objective reality of the Sahel region and also of the Burkinabe people,” emphasizes General Evariste NDAYISHIMIYE. The AU Special Envoy and current Chairperson of the continental organization announces: “I intend to prepare a thorough and objective report for my peers at the AU, and I hope that, based on this report, relations will be further strengthened. Together, we can move toward a shared future.”
